🇵🇰 PAKISTAN vs 🇮🇳 INDIA · T20 WORLD CUP 2026
ULTIMATE SEMIFINAL QUALIFICATION DOSSIER
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has reached its most chaotic juncture: four days, six matches, and two semifinal spots wide open. Pakistan (Group A2) and India (Group A1) face unique mathematical labyrinths. After 14 matches, net run rates (NRR) have become the main character. Here’s your 360° briefing – with exclusive player imagery, venue breakdowns and every possible knock‑out combination.

After a shock 48‑run loss to South Africa, India’s NRR slipped to +0.267. They have two fixtures left: vs West Indies (Colombo, 15 Mar) and vs Zimbabwe (Colombo, 17 Mar).
If India qualify, their semi will be in Mumbai unless they face Pakistan – that specific match moves to Colombo (R. Premadasa) under the ICC hybrid model announced 28 Feb 2026.
Pakistan (2 pts, NRR -0.107) faces England (14 Mar) then Sri Lanka (17 Mar). A clean sweep (6 pts) puts them through. With 4 pts they need help: New Zealand (4 pts) must lose to Sri Lanka, and Pakistan must beat Sri Lanka to jump ahead on NRR.
If Pakistan qualify, their semifinal is fixed in Colombo regardless of opponent – a cornerstone of the ICC hosting compromise.
Based on ICC’s 28 February 2026 contingency plan (ref: ICC/T20WC/2026/med4):
- Scenario A (PAK qualifies): Pakistan’s semifinal (any opponent) at R. Premadasa, Colombo. The other semi at Eden Gardens if opponent is not India? Wait: if India qualifies separately and doesn’t face Pakistan, India’s semi in Mumbai, the other in Kolkata.
- Scenario B (PAK fail, SL qualify): Colombo hosts semi with Sri Lanka (if they avoid India).
- Scenario C (only IND qualifies among sub‑continent): IND semi in Mumbai, other semi in Kolkata.
- Scenario D (PAK vs IND final): Final shifted to Dubai (UAE) – guaranteed neutral.
| 🇵🇰 PAK (2 pts, -0.107) — vs ENG, vs SL | max 6 |
| 🇳🇿 NZ (4 pts, +0.312) — vs SL, vs PAK? | control |
| 🇱🇰 SL (2 pts, -0.02) — vs NZ, vs PAK | must win both |
| 🏴 ENG (0 pts, -1.04) — vs PAK, vs AUS | need miracle |
India group: IND 2 pts (+0.267), WI 4 pts (+0.81), ZIM 2 pts (+0.04), SA 2 pts (+0.42). Remaining: WI vs IND, ZIM vs SA, IND vs ZIM, SA vs WI. Any team can still finish top.
Historically, India and Pakistan met 7 times in T20 WC; India leads 5-2. The 2026 group encounter saw India post 175/7, then bowl out Pakistan for 114. But Pakistan’s middle order has since found form – Babar scored 94* vs NZ, and Rauf took 5/21. The knockout permutations are heavily influenced by who handles pressure. In Colombo, spinners may play a part. Pakistan’s probable semi opponent (if they qualify) could be South Africa or West Indies. India might face New Zealand or Sri Lanka.
The infamous 2024 NRR elimination (Pakistan missed semi by 0.03) still haunts; this year the margins could be even finer. If Pakistan beat England by 25 runs and then Sri Lanka by 30 runs, they’d end at approx +0.45 NRR. If NZ lose to SL by 20 runs (NRR drop to +0.15), Pakistan leapfrogs. If all three (PAK, NZ, SL) end at 4 pts, NRR sorts them.
Meanwhile, India’s fate may come down to their game vs West Indies. A washout (1 pt) would leave India on 3 pts; then even a win vs ZIM puts them at 5 pts. But WI with 4+1? Actually, if WI beat ZIM and tie vs IND, they’d be 5+? let’s calculate: currently WI 4 pts, if they beat ZIM (2 pts -> 6pts), they qualify. If IND beat WI, then WI stay at 4; if IND also beat ZIM, IND 6, WI 4, ZIM 2, SA 2? complicated.
